Poppins Purim - SCENE 2 - In King’s Palace

The Butler is slouching.
He sees King BankAchashverosh coming.
He alerts the Cook & the Maid in a game of “telephone.”
They all frantically adjust themselves one by one in sequence to look extremely busy & productive.

Butler:                         He’s coming…..

Butler runs over to tell Cook.

Cook:                         He’s coming….

Cook runs over to tell Maid.

Maid runs over to tell Butler,

Maid:                           rolling her eyes and hitting herself in the head as she realizes he already know she says, “He’s coming….”
Butler motions her back to her place and opens the door and in a frenzy,

King BankAchashverosh walks through the door, and looks at the Butler from head to toe

Butler:                         Good day, your Heiness! Breathes sigh of relief!

King BankA:               Good day! King walks towards the Maid, and looks at her from head to toe.

Maid:                           Good day, your Heiness!  Breathes sigh of relief! and she sweeps her final shoe under/behind a dresser in the corner of the room.
She continues to dust sweep all the lines of shoes.

King BankA:               Good day! King walks towards the cook.

Cook:                          Good day, your Heiness!  The Cook sighs a breath of relief JUST as the King walks past, and she places her final dish on the table.

King BankA:               Good day!
Nanny Vashti enters frenzied with the 2 children

Children:                     The children see their father, and  stand like soldiers Good day, Father, Sir!

King BankA:               The King approaches Nanny Vashti with a huge warm smile. What extraordinary shoes you are wearing today, children….but yours are the most shiny I have seen, Nanny Vashti! Come dance with me, and become my Queen! (He pauses, surprised, that Nanny Vashti is not smiling back.) Well, whatever is the matter, Nanny Vashti?  Don’t let this bit of heavy weather head you down!

Nanny Vashti:             (Extremely aggravated, Her hands are waving at them in the air) Dance with you?! Dance with you?!?! What type of Queen? I have been home slaving after your children all day as you are playing with money at the bank! Your children are beasts---they hide shoes from me all day long! The last thing I want to do is dance with you!

King BankA:               (Looking shocked at her behavior) Whatever do you mean?

Nanny Vashti:             (Irate) You treat me just awful, NO HEALTHCARE, and leave me to completely raise your children. And, why are you always asking me to dance for you? I’m leaving ShoeShine Palace! Nanny Vashti throws the Royal Shining Shoes at King

BankAchashverosh Go find yourself a new Nanny - AND this time you should be more clear in the “job description!”  (Sarcastically rhyming) I’ll even give you a HAND. I’ll find you the best Nanny in all the LAND!

She then stomps over to the front palace door, the Butler opens it, and she screams out to the street…a chorus of passer-byers, including BertaCHAI, stand gawking.
Nanny Vashti bursts out of the house through the door to the street and sings her song. A chorus of people are walking by and stare! BertaCHAI is one of the on-gazers. The chorus, with BertaCHAI leading them, then sings the last chorus verse after she storms off the stage.

SONG: AT HIM I’LL LAUGH

At Him I’ll Laugh
To The Tune of “I Love To Laugh”

At him I laugh
Loud and long and clear
At him I laugh
With the King I’ve had it up to here

At him I’ll laugh
I won’t dance he’ll see
And I don’t agree
With what has happened to me
It’s horrible

With what has happened to me!

Sometimes he asks bringing roses
Sounding something like this:

(Mimics King sounding kindly) “Vashti come dance for me”
A fox in sheep’s clothing he asks, oh so fake
I give and I give and he takes
And I’m sick and tired of this treatment

I am harassed
His voice he does blast….VASHTI
He only says empty words
He is so blind
I am losing my mind

(Vocalizes Annoyance through sound)

You know there are times when I feel like I’m going a bit loco!

He is some kind of dummy
I’ve been a good bride
I’m over his nonsense I’m through
I won’t be his Queen, he won’t be my beau
I wish you all adieu

Vashti Exits

Chorus Sings:
At him she’ll laugh
Loud and long and clear
At him she’ll laugh
With the King she’s had to in here

At him she’ll laugh
She won’t dance he’ll see
She won’t agree
With what has happened you see
It’s horrible
With what has happened you see!
